the beautiful village of chatel

Chatel village is a beautiful Alpine village with exactly the right mix of local shops, charming restaurants, and both lively and relaxing apres ski bars offering live music and of course the odd glass of vin chaud.

There is plenty to do other than ski, with activities such as ice skating, bowling, ice diving, or a trip to the cinema.

The Skiing
Chatel is at the very heart of the largest linked ski area in the world, The Portes du Soleil. For some reason the portes du soleil hardly gets a mention when people talk about the big ski resorts, we're not quite sure why as this is without doubt the best ski area in the world.
The area is completely linked by a high speed lift system, and everyday that you ski you really get a feeling of 'going somewhere' rather than just skiing up and down the same runs.

The Chatel area is now completely covered by snow cannons which means guaranteed snow from the beginning of December to the end of April!

There are over 650km of completely linked pistes across two countries, you can ski all week, without going over the same run twice, and without taking your skis off!
For the more adventurous there are famous black runs such as the Coupe de Monde, or the Swiss Wall (actually classified as an 'Orange' run as it's deemed too difficult to be classified Black!) and the off-piste is without doubt some of the best in the Alps. As part of your holiday you will have the chance to be shown around this fantastic area by a qualified ski instructor, free of charge!

There are hundreds of great mountain restaurants where, unlike many in the Alps, you wont need a bank loan before buying lunch! An average 'Plate du jour' on the mountain will cost you around 10 euros.

Chatel has one of the best snow records in the Alps, Nearby Avoriaz, which is just 2 lifts away, is the snowiest resort in France, receiving an average of almost 8 metres of snow a season! During last seasons 'snow drought' in the Alps, Chatel was one of the few resorts to remain open from the very beginning to the very end of the season! Snow cannons now cover the entire Chatel area providing a great back up...

.....

What a wonderful place. Unspoiled but with all the facilities you could want. Superb snow due to location (don't let the height fool you) friendly, traditional village and fantastic restaurants. Best kept ski resort secret - 650 km of linked runs for all abilities.

You can keep Val d'Isere and all the upmarket, expensive resorts - this is what is all about. Loved it so much, we bought a chalet.
